John Maounis is New CBPO Director
Maounis is New Director of NPS Chesapeake Bay Program Offices and NPS Northeast Region Heritage Area Programs

Annapolis, MD (01/23/06) - John Maounis has been named Director of National Park Service (NPS) Chesapeake Bay Program Office, as well as of NPS Northeast Region Heritage Area Programs, a new position, by NPS Northeast Regional Director Mary A. Bomar. Maounis, previously Chief of Staff at the Northeast Regional Office in Philadelphia, assumes his new duties on January 23, 2006.

The NPS Chesapeake Bay Program Office coordinates the agency’s involvement in efforts to conserve and restore the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The office oversees the Congressionally authorized Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, a partnership that connects communities and visitors with the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through over 150 special parks, wildlife refuges, museums, sailing ships, historic communities, and trails.

Maounis will also coordinate NPS involvement with National Heritage Areas in the Northeast Region. Congress has established 27 National Heritage Areas around the country to conserve and celebrate heritage and special landscapes; more than half are located within the Northeast Region.

“John has completed several major projects in his current position, including creation of the park partnership office, advancing support of National Heritage Areas, furthering civic engagement throughout the region and nationally, and development of the regional office business plan” said Bomar, “He brings a great depth of expertise to the Chesapeake Bay and the important new position as Director of Northeast Region Heritage Areas.”

Prior to assuming his position as chief of staff in 2003, Maounis served as the Deputy Regional Associate Director for Cultural Resources of the National Park Service’s Northeast Region. Maounis was the principal advisor to Northeast Regional Director on matters relating to park Cultural Resource Management. He oversaw the documentation and preservation of nationally significant cultural resources, including some 160 cultural landscapes, 5,300 historic structures, 14,000 archeological sites, 26 million museum objects and archives.

Maounis began his National Park Service career in 1978 at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area when the San Francisco Maritime Museum became a unit of the park. He continued as a curator with increasing responsibilities for other parts of the extensive collections of the Maritime Museum and the park until 1984 when he assumed the position of Supervisory Museum Curator for collections, exhibition, and small craft programs.

In 1988 he left the San Francisco area to assume the position of Regional Curator for the former NPS North Atlantic Region. In 1994 Maounis became the Director of the newly created Northeast Museum Services Center, a support center for parks throughout the Northeast Region of the NPS, providing professional assistance to the 76 park units that hold some 26 million museum items in their collections.

Maounis received his BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received a Masters in Library Science also from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977. He has completed graduate studies in the history of photography and museum studies.
