Renowned Colonial HIstorian at CSM

Saturday November 6
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Renowned colonial Chesapeake historian Dr. Lorena Walsh will offer a free lecture at the College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown campus on November 6. In her lecture, Early Chesapeake Planters, Dr. Walsh will explore the unique innovations early European settlers made, why they made them, and what they lost as well as what they gained from migrating. She will examine the transformation of Chesapeake society that took place when opportunity diminished for voluntary migrants and the planter elite turn to enslaved Africans to solve labor shortages. Dr. Walsh has authored and co-authored dozens of articles and books about the Colonial Chesapeake. Among them are the award-winning Robert Coles World, with Historic St. Mary’s City historian Dr. Lois Carr and Dr. Russell Menard. Her most recent addition to an impressive list of published works is Motives of Honor, Pleasure and Profit: Plantation Management in the Chesapeake, 1607-1763. Dr. Walsh will present in the auditorium at 4 p.m. Copies of her latest book will be available for sale following the lecture. This event is sponsored by the Historic St. Mary’s City Foundation and the College or Southern Maryland.
