Saturday July 10
7:30 AM - 9:30 PM
Come celebrate the launch of the Nanticoke River Water Trail in Delaware. Stretching approximately 26 miles through Sussex County, the Trail begins above the City of Seaford, following the river’s mainstem to the Maryland State line and including Deep Creek and Broad Creek.
The official dedication ceremony is at 2pm at the Nanticoke River Bridge in Seaford. You can enjoy a host of other activities throughout the day, all part of the annual Nanticoke Riverfest.
The Nanticoke is one of the healthiest and most ecologically diverse rivers on the Delmarva Peninsula, with landscapes ranging from thick forests to salt marshes. Plenty of animals live along the water too, including rare species like the endangered Delmarva fox squirrel. A trip along the Nanticoke also takes you through one of the highest concentration of Bald Eagles in the Northeastern United States – so be sure to bring binculars when you head out to explore. The state of Delaware has also developed a set of interpretative maps for the Water Trail that highlight the history and natural environment of the river. These will soon be available at http://shop.delaware.gov or you can look for one at the Riverfest. Each guide represents approximately 4- to 5-mile river segments and provides details necessary to plan safe recreational outings.
