Saturday June 12
9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) will host its 7th annual Youth Fishing Derby, with free freshwater fishing for children from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year's Derby will also introduce the refuge's new Outdoor Wildlife Learner (OWL) program, with an OWL adventure from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring live owls.
The Youth Fishing Derby offers kids (under 16 years old) the fun of catch-and-release fishing at the refuge's stocked pond. Poles and bait will be provided. Young anglers will also have the chance to win fishing tackle and other prizes.
There's a lot to learn about wildlife, and outdoors at Eastern Neck is a natural classroom. The refuge's first Outdoor Wildlife Learner (OWL) adventure will feature live barred, screech, and great horned owls from the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center. Visitors of all ages can learn all about owls: where they live, what they eat, and how they see, hear, and fly.
Free T-shirts and materials will be provided so children can create their own "Fish T" with gyotaku (printing with fish replicas) or an OWL shirt with stamps.
