Eastern Shore
Photo from Eastern Shore

The Chesapeake is a constant in life on the Eastern Shore. With dozens of tidal rivers and extensive wetlands, “The Shore” is one of the Bay’s most ecologically important regions. It supports fish spawning areas and shellfish beds. It provides critical habitat for migratory waterfowl.

The cultural traditions of the Eastern Shore (which includes parts of both Maryland and Virginia) are based in the timeless bonds linking human populations and the Bay’s rich resources. Many of the small towns and rural landscapes in this region stand today as a living reminder of the unique ways of life that are an indelible part of the Chesapeake story.

Through the Gateways Network, you can explore the Eastern Shore’s natural wonders in any number of state parks, water trails, natural areas, and wildlife refuges. Its distinctive cultural riches are on display at museums big and small, at important historical sites, along timeless Main Streets, and aboard traditional sailing ships.
