Mathews County Blueways Map & Guide - As a kayaking guide who has led expeditions nearly the world over, Michael Swiderski has had his share of misadventures with maps. "I’ve had them mislead me, I’ve had them disintegrate on me when they got wet - just everything that can go wrong," he says. "So I know a good map when I see one.
And the linked set of five water-trail maps he picked up last fall in Mathews County, Virginia are top of the line in Swiderski’s estimation. They are elegantly designed, for one thing. But more importantly, they’re user-friendly, with everything laid out sensibly and on the same page—launch sites, statute miles, notable sites, navigation symbols, and more.
The maps even make it easy to find links between the five main routes in the 90 miles of Blueways trails. "One of my reasons for going paddling there was to create an extended expedition route for my students," says Swiderski, a professor in the Adventuresports Institute of Garrett College. "These maps made my work really easy."
