| Key Features: | A narrow boat hollowed from a single log. Smaller versions, called punts, were 12 to 15 feet in length, but some dugouts were up to 40 or 50 feet long. Before Native peoples had access to European tools, they probably used fire to fashion their blunt-ended dugouts. |

| Interesting Facts: | In the late 1600s Native builders were often commissioned to craft dugouts for English colonists. Dugouts also had long been used in coastal Africa, and Africans brought to American shores were said in 1736 to “manage them very dexterously, with a Paddle.” |
