Brief Description: Martinak State Park sits along the Choptank River, the largest of the Eastern Shore tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. The park supports a wide variety of plant and animal life. Hardwood and pine forests surround the park, which offers modern campsites and boating access. Martinak is a haven for bird watchers, who must choose to walk the park's abundant hiking trails or paddle the waterways via canoe.
Location / Directions: The park is located on the Eastern Shore, two miles east of Denton off of Route 404 on Deep Shore Road in Caroline County.

From Route 50, take Route 404 East, and turn right onto Deep Shore Road. Follow signs to the park from there.

Activities: Anglers will find bass, perch, sunfish, and catfish in the Choptank River. (Note: You must have a Chesapeake Bay Sportfishing License to fish in the tidal waters of the river and creek.) The park’s boat launch and pier offer easy access to the waterways, and the park rents canoes during the summer months.

Martinak features 63 campsites for trailer or tent camping; 30 of the sites have electric hook-ups. Each site is equipped with a camping pad, picnic table, and fire ring. Each camping loop has its own modern bathhouse. There are no water hook-ups, but there’s a dump station for trailers, and potable water is located around each loop.

There also are four camper cabins and one full-service cabin. The full-service cabin overlooks the Choptank River and is available for year-round rental. It sleeps four and contains a kitchen, bath facilities, bed linens, heat, air conditioning, and a screened-in porch. You can rent the four camper cabins from early spring through late fall. They each sleep four and contain a ceiling fan, electricity, and air conditioning. Each cabin also features an outside fire ring, grill, and picnic table. Restroom and shower facilities are located a short walk away

Martinak's picnic areas contain picnic tables, playground equipment, restrooms, and pavilions overlooking the Choptank River. Rent the two pavilions by calling the statewide reservation system at 888-432-2267.

The camp also hosts two camps during the summer:

  • Bird Watching Camp, July 19-20, $25 per camper.

  • Bass Fishing Camp, August 1-2, $35 per camper

Operating Hours: The park is open daily from 10:00am to sunset.

Family camping at Martinak is open from April 29 to September 26 this year. The camper cabins and picnic shelters are available for the same timeframe. The full-service cabin is open year-round.

Fees: There are no fees to visit Martinak for day use.

Use of campsites and picnic pavilions at Martinak State Park is billed at the following nightly rates:

  • Campsite, $20/night

  • Campsite with electric, $25/night

  • Camper cabins, $50/night

  • Full service cabins, $65/night on weekdays, $75/night on weekends

  • 60-person picnic shelters, $30/day

Check with park personnel for current canoe rental rates.

Visitor Facilities: Martinak State Park features hiking trails, 63 campsites plus cabins for small groups, a playground, picnic shelters, a boat launch and a pier, and a visitor center.
Accessibility: Martinak State Park offers one accessible camp loop with a central bathhouse. The park’s nature center and picnic areas also are handicapped accessible.
