|Friends of the Chesapeake Gateways Welcomes Eleanor Mahoney|
Annapolis, MD (08/07/09) -
The Friends of Chesapeake Gateways (Friends) welcomed onboard its first fulltime staff member, Eleanor Mahoney. In her new position as program director, Eleanor will work closely with individual Gateways, the Working Group, and the National Park Service’s Chesapeake Bay Program Office to build a vibrant and sustainable Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network (CBGN). “In boosting the capacity of Friends, we hope to expand the Network’s value and effectiveness across the entire watershed,” said NPS Chesapeake Bay Office superintendent John Maounis. “We are looking forward to the Friends continuing their strong work promoting Chesapeake stewardship through the use and enjoyment of the Gateways and the Network.”
Some immediate projects Eleanor will be working on include:
Eleanor is fortunate to be building on the formative work accomplished over the past four years by outgoing Executive Director Claudia Schechter. Claudia has been a tireless supporter of CBGN and the Friends since their respective inceptions and has contributed significant time, energy and expertise towards the achievement of the CBGN’s mission and vision. “We would like to thank her for all that she accomplished during her tenure. We are also very pleased to announce that Claudia will continue to work with the Friends as a valued member of the organization’s Board of Directors,” said Scott Beatty, chairman of the Friends of Chesapeake Gateways.
A native of the Washington, DC region, Eleanor brings experience working in both the public and the non-profit sector. Most recently, she served as the assistant national coordinator for heritage areas, a grassroots, community partnership initiative of the NPS. In this capacity, she directed public relations and outreach for the national program office in Washington, DC, led an agency-wide effort to align national heritage area designation and planning processes across multiple NPS divisions, and developed new training and technical assistance opportunities for the 49 congressionally designated National Heritage Areas.
