Captain John Smith’s Explorer’s Camp

block Mason Neck State Park

Mason Neck State Park, a Chesapeake Bay Gateway site along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, will improve interpretation and education of this historic site while promoting and fostering long-term citizen stewardship. This project will provide 10 sessions of the Explorer’s Camp, a one week, half-day summer day camp experience free of charge for at risk youth. Mason Neck State Park is located in an area explored by Captain John Smith on his first voyage of discovery in the New World. The camp will introduce and develop an understanding and appreciation for the rich cultural, historic and natural resources which make this site so unique and important. Through this project 150 at risk youth will have an opportunity to explore the Gateway park, engage their imagination and receive a layered outdoor educational experience that will supplement the Virginia Standards of Learning for History and Science.
