This project will enhance this Gateway and strengthen its connection to the developing Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. The project will create a new Rappahannock River Water Trail Guide focused on Mount Landing Creek and vicinity and addressing important wildlife habitats and the strong connection of the Rappahannock River to the Chesapeake Bay. The project will also create interpretive waysides to educate visitors about Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge and present the historic importance of the site in relation to Captain John Smith’s voyages of exploration on the Chesapeake Bay.
