Hidden Treasure of the Chesapeake: Paleontology Gallery Upgrade at CMM
Calvert Marine Museum
For the first time, the public will have an opportunity to observe and experience the Chesapeake’s amazing fossil history as it is being uncovered in real time. This project will modify the museum’s fossil preparation lab by converting it into a public viewing space and fully interactive exhibit. Visitors will be able to see and experience actual fossil preparation along with new discoveries as they happen. New display cabinets will display large fossil whale and dolphin skulls along with many other specimens recovered from Calvert Cliffs. A large sliding window will give visitors the opportunity to converse with volunteers and scientist as they work. With an increase in space, preparators will be able to bring visitors into the lab for further exploration. New educational programs will allow students the opportunity to practice fossil preparation and interpretation of the Chesapeake Bay’s fossil record. A series of new public exhibits will interpret the prehistoric ecology of the Bay and show how the Bay was formed.
