Chesapeake Bay Living

block Smith Island Center

The last in the series of exhibits depicting the history and cultural life of residents on Smith Island will provide both an introduction as well as summary through a composition of photographs and artifacts interpreting life in a unique Chesapeake Bay community. The project would place photographs of Island residents in natural settings, work environment while providing a quick summary of life on the Chesapeake Bay to the casual visitors. The project includes contacting surviving family members of the 36 captains and collecting photos and stories about their lives and work on the water for preservation in the museum. The rudder of the skipjack, Claude Somers, anchors the introductory exhibit and will serve as a memorial for skipjack captains from the Smith Island Oyster Fleet.
