Gateways for Migration

This collaborative project will interpret the importance of Kiptopeke State Park and the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge to annual fall and spring bird migrations through the Chesapeake Bay. The project will improve the opportunities for visitors to learn about migration at these sites through exhibits at the refuge visitor center, including video of breeding terns and nesting osprey, weatherproof portable exhibits for use at birding programs and festivals, and scripts designed to help volunteer naturalists and park/refuge staff provide accurate information to visitors. The project will also compile and analyze 70 years of volunteer bird banding and observational data for use in interpretive programming and habitat management at both sites. The Center for Conservation Biology will work with both sites to carry out the project and provide the match for the Gateways grant.
