Under the Bay

block Virginia Living Museum

This project created a centerpiece exhibit for the Virginia Living Museum's entirely new facility, which opened in March 2004. The Chesapeake Bay Open Water exhibit, a 200 square foot, 30,000 gallon, salt-water aquarium, allows visitors to virtually “walk into” the Chesapeake Bay. This dramatic exhibit showcases the underwater side of the Bay that so few people ever get a chance to see, or even imagine, from a sea turtle paddling near the surface to deep-water sharks, black drum and other species. Advanced habitat design techniques give visitors the illusion of being part of the exhibit rather than a passive bystander. Trained docents introduce and interpret Bay ecology, helping visitors understand the complexity and significance of the Chesapeake Bay environment. The exhibit fits with a series of other large elements of the new museum, which in total expose visitors to a cross-section of the Chesapeake watershed, from headwaters to open Bay.
