| In 1633, a group of Roman Catholics under the proprietorship of Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore, traveled from England in pursuit of a haven in the new world where they could practice their religion. When the colonists landed at St. Clement's Island in the Potomac River they celebrated the first Roman Catholic Mass in the original colonies. This story of Maryland's beginnings is told at the St. Clement's Island–Potomac River Museum. Museum exhibits describe the conditions in England that drove the quest for religious refuge and tolerance, the difficulties of planning the new colony, and the perilous voyage on the Ark and Dove. The Museum also provides group tours to St. Clement's Island, a state park accessible only by boat. The island offers wonderful views across the Potomac River, hiking trails, picnic facilities, and interpretive panels. |
