Susquehanna River Water Trail - Middle Section - From Sunbury to Harrisburg, PA

Gateways Network matching grants are helping support the following projects at this Gateway. These projects are intended to enhance the public's ability to learn and enjoy the Bay’s stories and significance, explore its natural and cultural resources, and become involved in Bay stewardship. Through these projects and other Gateways Network efforts more and more people recognize the Chesapeake as a true national treasure.

Development of Susquehanna River Trail - North Branch

Two complementary grants, one to the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and one to the Endless Mountains Heritage Area, will extend the Susquehanna River Trail along the North Branch of the Susquehanna to the Pennsylvania/New York border. These projects will build on the existing Susquehanna water trails on lower segments of the river. Each project will develop a map and guide, informational signs, and a management strategy for that trail segment. Ultimately, this project will show how this stretch of the Susquehanna and its watershed relate to the rest of the river and the Chesapeake Bay. Water trails help people access, enjoy and understand the river and engage them in caring for it. The Endless Mountains Heritage Area and other partners will contribute funding and time to match the Gateways grant.

Each campsite insert contains a red line path that shows the route to the campsite. Latitude and longitude is shown for each campsite. (More Info)

Susquehanna River Water Trail Signage

This project will develop and implement a unified orientation and safety signage system for the Susquehanna River Water Trail (including the mainstem and North and West Branches). Orientation and safety signage provides basic orientation, user and safety information to water trail users. The signs will provide user information to water trail users making it easier for people to access the Bay’s resources. They will also improve the access points along the Susquehanna River through consistent safety and orientation information at all access points. The project will: (1) create a sign template for use by project managers who are implementing orientation and safety signage along the river; and (2) provide the layout, fabrication and installation for up to 45 signs.
