Watermen of the Chesapeake Bay - Watermen make their living harvesting the Bay’s finfish, shellfish, eels and crabs. Independent and self-employed, they own their boats and choose their catch. It’s a tough, physically demanding way of life, and it’s been going on for hundreds of years. |
Waterfowl, Decoys and the Waterfowling Tradition - With its vast expanses of shallow waters and wetlands, the Chesapeake Bay is a waterfowl magnet. It’s situated along the Atlantic flyway, so migrating birds often stop or winter here en route from their northern summer breeding grounds. |
Boatbuilding on the Bay - From the moment humans set eyes on the Chesapeake Bay, they have built boats for harvesting seafood, transporting goods and people, and having fun. Over time, the Bay’s boatbuilders developed designs unique to the Chesapeake. |
Early Discovery and Settlement of Chesapeake Bay - One of the continuing wonders of the Chesapeake Bay is its ability to let us step back in time. Yes, cities and people press from all sides. There are places where the strip malls and highways of the contemporary world literally bury the past. |
