Bay Workboats
Key Features:A deadrise workboat equipped with a hydraulic patent-tong rig that is operated by a system of levers and pedals.
Period of Use:1950s - present
Use:Oyster dredging in deeper parts of the Bay
Interesting Facts:The hydraulic patent-tong rig is extremely efficient. Compared to manually-operated “drop” tongs, hydraulic gear reportedly enabled a waterman to harvest twice as many oysters in the same amount of time. By the early 1960s virtually all oystermen had adopted the hydraulic rig.
Where to see one:Deadrises fitted with patent-tongs can be seen in many parts of southern Bay region.
