Description:Sandy Point ShoalCaisson located in the upper Bay near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Sandy Point State Park. The first light in this location, an onshore brick tower built in 1858, was supplanted in 1883 by this caisson with a 37-foot Empire-style eight-sided, red brick tower with a white roof and black lantern housing a 4th order Fresnel lens. Operational; automated in 1963. Fog horn. Owned and maintained by USCG(Coast Guard Activities Baltimore). Eligible for listing on National Register of Historic Places.
Type of Structure:Red brick dwelling with white roof on brown caisson.
Purpose:To mark shoals at Sandy Point.
