Newport News Middle Ground
Year Built:1891
Description:Newport News Middle GroundConical, 35-foot, red "spark plug" caisson light in Hampton Roads at the confluence of the James River and Chesapeake Bay. Operational; automated in 1954. Originally housed a 4th order Fresnel lens and had a fog bell. Modern light is outside the lantern room, atop a pole. Owned and maintained by USCG (Coast Guard Group Hampton Roads). Eligible for listing on National Register of Historic Places.
Type of Structure:Red cast-iron house atop a red cast iron caisson.
Purpose:Marks the middle ground shoal in Hampton Roads.
Interesting Facts:Coast Guard performed many repairs in 1982. In 1986-87 the light was solarized. More repairs were made in 1988.
