Goals of the Network

The Gateways Network serves as a key guide assisting visitors in finding, enjoying, and learning about the special places and stories of the Chesapeake and its watershed. The Network and all participating Gateways do this for a reason -- the Chesapeake's future depends on watershed residents and visitors feeling connected with and understanding the Bay and its resources.

Three goals drive the Network:

  • Help people better understand the Chesapeake by enhancing interpretation and education about the Bay watershed's special places and stories.
  • Help people access these special places through information, maps, guides and improvements for a system of Gateways and linking land and water routes.
  • Help Bay watershed residents and visitors appreciate the part they play in the Bay's survival, and how they can become involved in conserving and restoring the natural, cultural, historical and recreational resources of this national treasure.
